Local Information

Here's a bit of local information for things to do in and around Ullapool on days when diving isn't an option, or for family and friends who are not divers. Click here for a streetmap of the village.

The village has got several hotels, B&B's, self catering and hostels to stay in...something to meet everyone's budget. One of the things the club is often asked by visiting divers is where should we stay...well here's one for starters....

Chalet individually sited in the south-east corner of this beautiful bay at Ardmair 3 miles North of Ullapool. The chalet has 3 bedrooms, one double, two twin rooms. The open plan living room/kitchenette has a colour television, dining table and facilities include kettle, toaster, fridge, microwave and cooker.  The bathroom has both a bath and shower.

The chalet is electric and heating consists of electric wall heaters.  A £1 coin operated meter charges electricity.  Linen is not provided, although blankets and pillows are.  Parking is available at each chalet.

As a diver in the local sub-aqua club myself I can advise on dive sites and also can assist with air fills if necessary.

Anchoring is possible below the chalet depending on the wind direction.

Prices from £200 per week, contact Malcolm MacLeod on 07785 335994

Ullapool has plenty of shops to wander round - or to pop in to dodge the rain! The shops are mainly found on two streets in the village, Shore Street and Argyle Street. These two streets run parallel to each other and have the usual tourist outlets and some unique shops such as "Artworks" and "Strandlines". Highland Stoneware Pottery is well worth a visit and can be found on North Road, just out of the village. We have a good Safeway that opens until 8pm in the summer, 6pm in the winter. Safeway is situated next to the Latheron car park - parking here is plentiful and free of charge.

For those interested in history, Ullapool Museum is a great place to spend an afternoon. It has lots of old photos and interesting displays. The museum is on Argyle Street.

Internet access is abundant; you can get online at the hostels, the bookshop or the library (situated in the High School on North Road).

For the more energetic there's bike hire from West House Hostel on Argyle Street and numerous walks around the area. Our leisure centre has a wonderful family swimming pool, sauna, gym and loads of stuff going on for kids during the school holidays. Ullapools 9-hole golf course is popular with locals and visitors alike.

Photo: The wee pier, UllapoolIf you enjoy the sea there are two terrific boat trips available. The "Summer Queen" does two- and four-hour nature cruises up Loch Broom and around the Summer Isles. The "Summer Queen" ticket office is on Shore Street not far from the Seascape office. Seascape visit the islands in a high-powered rhib.

Fishing boats are for hire at Ardmair, 3-miles north of Ullapool. Ardmair is also the starting point for visits to Isle Martin, well known for its abundant bird life. The local Tourist Information office can provide more information. It is on Argyle Street in Ullapool.

Local bus services run to Inverness, Gairloch and Achiltibuie, and for exact times check with the Tourist Information office. There are usually two buses a day (none on Sundays) in summer which usually meet the ferry from Lewis.
